Municipal Fleets & Vulnerable Road User Safety

As any municipal fleet manager knows, the level of contact with vulnerable road users (VRUs) is higher with municipal vehicles than almost any other industry sector, simply because they’re almost always active within a city. This is one reason that they’re often considered one of the most difficult sectors for drivers, with safety concerns paramount.

Solving Municipal Road User Safety

At Vision Techniques, we treat vulnerable road user safety as a priority. We provide a wide range of products that can be thought of as assisting the driver or alerting your VRUs.

Driver Safety Assistance

For municipal HGVs our DVS Progressive Safe System is designed for compliance with the Direct Vision Standard. This is the law in London and represents the strictest standard for road safety currently in use. Incorporating blind spot camera systems, video analysis, and audio alerts for VRUs, the Progressive Safe System gives your drivers the maximum support and significantly reduces the risk of accident.

In liability protection, we also recommend in-cab recording devices to demonstrate, in the unfortunate event of an issue, that the fleet is not to blame. The VT Record Six provides a top-of-the-line service.

Alerting Vulnerable Road Users

Since the Highway Code was revised in 2022, the highest burden of responsibility for road accidents and collisions has been placed on those operating the vehicle with the greatest potential for harm.

However, taking action to warn VRUs themselves if they are about to stray into a danger zone is still a powerfully effective step. Our VT Safezone and VT Illuminated Turnsign products, along with the VT Turnalarm, are designed to alert other road users with clear and precise information, allowing them to correctly gauge where is safe to remain.

We’ve also developed the VT Lightboard which can display programmable messages, allowing your team to alert road users to other associated activity. For example, when your workers may be out of vehicle and in the road, the VT Lightboard can display ‘Caution: Workers at Rear’, giving other road users the warning they need.
