Should Your Fleet be FORS Accredited?

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is entirely voluntary. There’s no legal requirement to reach FORS standards for safety and environmental friendliness – but it’s still a very good idea.

FORS set out several goals for UK vehicle fleets, and it’s designed to help fleet managers and drivers to achieve them. They include:

  • Improved road safety through greater road awareness
  • Increased fuel efficiency
  • Building better safety processes

Through these and other initiatives the organisation is also looking to help UK fleets to improve their reputation, building a better rapport with the wider public. This is particularly valuable to municipal, highway construction, and bus fleets as they interact with the public the most. It still has value to many other sectors.

In addition to the reputational benefits, there are long-term cost savings to be made both by improved fuel efficiency and increased safety. Better safety systems can also help to limit liability in the event of an incident. And, of course, all of this can help drivers feel more supported and safer, improving their morale and giving drivers for non-accredited firms a reason to move.

Businesses in the construction industry as well as those who need extensive freight and haulage support have noticed the difference between FORS accredited fleets and those which are not. Consequently, applying for and maintaining accreditation can be a powerful tool for winning and retaining new business.

Many of Vision Techniques’ systems are designed to help a fleet achieve the safety standards required by FORS.
